Prim Perfect Issue 52: September 2014: Cover

Welcome—to a whole new incarnation of Prim Perfect!

You may have been wondering why you haven’t seen the magazine recently, and now you know why!

Over the summer we have been planning a complete redesign of Prim Perfect, both the magazine and the website, with the website becoming a portal for our blog, our magazine, and all our media productions, including Designing Worlds, Happy Hunting!, The Blackened Mirror, and The Quest for the Golden Prim.

The magazine has a whole new look—we have become squarer—but I think you’ll see, when you open it up, that there’s a whole new look to the pages, something that we’re very excited about!

Of course, we still keep the level of writing and information you’d expect. There are some of our favourite articles—and some exciting new ones too.

For example, we’re going to have a series of articles about controversial topics that Second Life residents argue about, and we’ve asked writers to put the cases for and against. First in the series we ask, “GACHAS: criminal ripoff or a way to play a fun game and take home adorable items?” Cain Maven and Alianna Logan put forward their arguments.

This issue sees the start of a new series which we’re planning to make highly interactive: Favourite Things. Each month, we’re asking you, our readers, to send us a brief account and a picture of something old or new that you love and would like to share with other readers. It’s a chance to give a boost to your favourite designer, so… why not take a look at the article—and then send yours in?

We’re also going to look under the bonnet at the workings of Second Life. We’re starting this with a series on animations: what they are and how they’re used. We start with a look at basic animations and animation overrides written by Beq Janus.

Prim Perfect Issue 52: September 2014: Froukje Hoorenbeek, Designer of the Month

Prim Perfect Issue 52: September 2014: Froukje Hoorenbeek, Designer of the Month

Our Designer of the Month is Froukje Hoorenbeek of Dutchie, whose amazing house, created over the last two years, is also a focus for a full photo feature. Joonie Jatho has interviewed Froukje and explored the house, while Judith LeFevre has created the photo feature.

Honour Macmillan has explored an interesting Region of the Month: the Cornfield, which has a long and interesting history in Second Life (read the article to learn more!). Now it is the location for trials of new tools for Second Life—how effective and engaging are they?

Qwis Greenwood continues to explore Second Life to discover small and niche designers who create interesting and unique items that we think you should get to know. This month she finds a store that caters to artists, photographers, and videographers, as well as instructors of training classes and leaders of business meetings.

There’s a beautiful new room design from Samantha Ohrberg, highlighting the skills of mesh designers… and if you would like to start working with mesh, we are re-running Beq Janus’s brilliant series on mesh.

There’s news of our annual event, Cake Against Cancer, a virtual world event in support of Macmillan Cancer Support’s fundraiser, the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning!

There’s another in our series of restaurant reviews, this time with a visit to a very special 1950s diner. And you can catch up on news about our TV shows: Designing Worlds, Happy Hunting!, and The Blackened Mirror.

Our team of talented photographers, led by Wildstar Beaumont, Judith LeFevre, and Honour McMillan, bring you some of the most artistic eye candy from across the metaverse.

All this with News From the Grid and more!

Prim Perfect Party

Prim Perfect Party

Because we’ve got a lot to celebrate!

Later today we are relaunching Prim Perfect magazine. There’s a whole new look, and new features (as well as some old favourites).  You’ll get even more gorgeous eye candy from our photographers – and great articles from our writers!

New website

New website

And in addition, we are migrating our website from here at wordpress.com to a whole new site at www.primperfect.net. It’s still a wordpress site, but hosted by ourselves, which will make it easier for us to add a range of new features. We’ll be combining the old primperfect.net website with the blog to make for a smoother, more integrated feel. It’s where you’ll be able to read about Designing Worlds shows too, with links to our other media productions, and our other activities.

And if you’re a current subscriber to the blog, don’t worry – we’ll be transferring everyone across later today!

So – as we are a home and garden magazine (as well as so much more, we like to think!), we’ll be holding a launch, relaunch and celebration party from 2pm – 4pm today in the Prim Perfect Castle at the Home and Garden Expo.  We’ll see you there!

Prim Perfect's Head Offices in the Seychelles

Prim Perfect’s Head Offices in the Seychelles

Prim Perfect Head Offices have changed their address!

Previously we were located in the Irish Isles. Now we have, seemingly, moved south and east the the Seychelles!

In actual fact, we were located in the Irish Isles on Irish Aran Island.  Now the Irish Isles have shifted their locationto the fringes of the Blake Sea and – in celebration, have changed their name and identity the the Seychelles Isles.  And our new location is Pointe LaRue Isle.

We still have our beautiful offices, designed by Dijodi Dubratt and landscaped by Aisling Sinclair.  And we will be holding events here over the coming months, with talks by designers and other celebrations.  We hope to be taking part in some of the events organised in the Seychelles too,

Our First Cover

Our First Cover

Six years ago today, I was exhausted.  I had been up most of the night, laying out the very first edition of Prim Perfect. Most of the work (I can modestly say) I did myself.  I wrote the articles, I took the photos, I sold the ads and I laid out the pages – all forty eight of them. I had help from a reporter who wrote an article, and from a designer who created the front page and laid out a few internal pages.  The rest was me.

So I was exhausted, but I was also looking forward to the party to celebrate the launch.  It was to include a charity auction, and that evening we raised enough money to put the roof on a school in Lesotho thanks to the generosity of designers like Sue Stonebender and Baron Grayson whose faith in Prim Perfect ensured that it got off to a flying start – quite literally, as the prize item in the auction was one of Baron’s ships, suspended gracefully over the square on Venice Island, the single region owned by Melody Regent, who had also backed the magazine from the start.

But it didn’t stay just a magazine for long. Six months later came the TV show – MetaMakeover, which later became Designing Worlds.  And then there was The Primgraph, Quest for the Golden Prim, Metaverse Arts, Happy Hunting! and The Blackened Mirror. And there have been specials and guidebooks for events (such as Home and Garden Expos and the 2012 Fantasy Faire). There have been campaigns that we played a major part in – such as Step Up! against content theft and One Billion Rising.  There have been parties, hunts, events, games, a lot of hard work, a lot of fun, and lot of friends and – considering everything – surprisingly little drama.

Six years later, we’re not having a party – but that doesn’t mean we see nothing to celebrate.  There’s a secret plan shortly to emerge, and we’re all hard at work on the new issue of Prim Perfect. We’ll probably party later in the month. We’re six now. I think we can party when we want to.

So today, on our sixth birthday, I want to say, quite simply, thank you to all the people who make Prim Perfect the prim perfection that it is – the people who have produced it over the years, the writers and photographers whose wonderful work fills the pages.  The advertisers whose support enables us to go on producing the magazine. The readers whose support and enthusiasm gives us some much pleasure and the willingness to go on, to improve and to always strive to be better.

Six years ago, I had a dream that here in this virtual world there could be a magazine for homes, for gardens, supporting designers and small businesses and nonprofits.  Six years later, I am so proud to be a part of Prim Perfect and all its associates, so lucky to have found such wonderful people to share my vision, and so privileged to have been able to create a voice that can speak for what I believe.

In fact, you can vote for us … and many, many of the people we have featured in Prim Perfect magazine, or on Designing Worlds or Happy Hunting. In short – the Avi Choice Awards represent a fantastic array of Second Life talent – and all nominated by the people behind avatars out there on the grid.

Avi Choice Awards Poste

But don’t just take our word for it … go to the Avi Choice Award site and register your votes for all the categories that you want.  It’s divided into four areas:

We’re in Entertainment – and you’ll see that Prim Perfect is nominated in the Best Magazine category, while Designing Worlds and Happy Hunting both feature in best TV show.

And if you are regularly readers (or viewers) you will doubtless recognise many of the names of nominees too!

The whole process culminates in an amazing awards presentation on December 14th from 6pm SLT onwards, a highlight of the Second Life Christmas Expo.  Elrik and Saffia (hosts of Designing Worlds) presented part of the programme of awards in 2011, and we are hugely honoured to have been asked to do this again – and this year, we’ll be joined by Aisling Sinclair and Zander Greene, stars of The Blackened Mirror.  Zander, of course, is the holder of the individual Spirit of Relay Award for Relay for Life of Second Life 2012 – and the funds raised by the Expo will go to support Relay for Life of Second Life 2013.
