We have received the following press release from The Relay Rockers (one of the best known teams from Relay for Life of Second Life):

2014 Alliez Mysterio Award Invitation

2014 Alliez Mysterio Award Invitation

The Relay Rockers are planning to present an award in honor of their late co-founder Alliez Mysterio.

“To honor our friend and co-founder The Relay Rockers have established the Alliez Mysterio award. The award recognizes those people who have, like Alliez, made a lasting contribution to the world’s biggest virtual event, The Relay For Life of Second Life.”

Beginning this season the Rockers will present the Award to the Relayer(s) who they feel best exemplify Alliez’ dedication by their contribution to Relay.

The award is to be presented at the team’s Thank You party, Sunday August 24, 2014, with the party beginning at 3pm.

The award will be given to the person or persons who, in the opinion of the team’s award committee, have exhibited “Relentless Dedication” and have made an “Enduring Contribution” to the Relay For Life of Second Life. “

Alliez Mysterio came to Second Life in 2003. A pioneering virtual explorer Alliez saw the potential of the nascent private island sims and in 2005 her first sim, Rue d’Alliez opened. From that single island d’Alliez Estates spread over the grid, growing to more than 150 islands. She established a system of ownership and rentals that has provided a home to many residents of Second Life regardless of their virtual manifestations, lifestyles or interests. She made every effort to accommodate her tenants, was always there to address issues and was loved by all who came to know her.

In 2005 she joined with Trader Whiplash and Nuala Maracas and formed the team that became known as the Relay Rockers. From 2005 until breast cancer took her from us in 2013 Alliez was a steadfast supporter of both the Relay Rockers and Relay For Life of Second Life.

2014 Alliez Mysterio Award

Alliez Mysterio left an indelible imprint on our virtual world and she is missed by one and all. This Award will honor both Alliez’s memory and the dedication of the awardees.

The Rockers, who celebrated ’10 Years Walking Strong’ this season finished with the highest possible fund raising level, Purple. They raised more than L$5 million through their signature events, Bid Me Bald and the Celebrate-Remember-Fight Back Top DJ Competition. They were also honoured during Relay weekend with the coveted “Returning Team Participation Award” as well as 1st place for The Inventive and Creative Fundraising Award and 2nd place for The Cancer Education Campsite Award.

The party, which will be held at Seasons dAlliez, will feature Gina Gracemount, a team supporter and Bid Me Bald ‘Victimteer’, performing live at 3pm and close with T1Radio’s Time Machine – the 60s, featuring Trader Whiplash. The 2014 Award Winner(s) will be announced at 4pm by Rockers Founding Captains Nuala Maracas & Trader Whiplash, 2014 Team Captain Ariel Stormcrow and Sue Peregrine, Alliez’s daughter and CEO of dAlliez Estates.”

Everyone is invited to attend and are asked to dress in semi-formal attire.

Relay for Life Weekend is over =- but you still have the chance to visit the 42 regions, which are expected to stay open for – at the very least – the early part of this week.

And believe me, it is well worth a visit! The teams have created some of the best camp-sites I have seen, with beauty, fun and information about cancer – often all in the same parcel!

In addition there are some stunning designer builds – and some great underwater builds too.

So don’t delay! You can start your journey at the Welcome Point, which has tons of information - but you can also just pull up the map and take your choice from all the sims whose name starts with RFL.  And you’ll see from the map that this year’s track was arranged in the shape of a ten – because Relay for Life of Second Life is now ten years old and – in terms of fundraising – it is now expected to be in the top 20 Relays for Life anywhere is the world for 2014.

Today, at 10am, the fantastic weekend of events that marks the climax of the 2014 season starts.

Relay For Life is the signature event of the American Cancer Society and has been active, and continually growing, now in Second Life for 10 years.

  • In 2005, the first Relay For Life of Second Life (RFL of SL) was attended by a few hundred avatars and raised almost $5,000 US dollars for the American Cancer Society.
  • In 2009 the Relay For Life of Second Life raised over $270,000. US dollars and was attended by thousands of avatars.
  • In 2011 the Relay For Life of Second Life raised over US$375,000 and ran right past the US$1,000,000 mark during the 2011 campaign!
  • In 2012 the Relay For Life of Second Life raised over US$375,000, taking the total raised since 2005 to over US$1,600,000 by the end of our 2012 fundraising season.
  • And in 2013, Relay for Life of Second Life, in a thrilling climax to the Relay weekend, crossed the 2,000,000 mark!

This year the plan is to raise US$401,000 – i.e. 401K. That figure represents a huge task – we started the weekend at 382,000.  The significance of the number is that 401 is the tax form that mark retirement in the United States – the plan is to RETIRE CANCER!

The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe (and in Second Life) a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, to remember loved ones lost, and to fight back against the disease.

Relay Weekend  is a fun-filled, overnight event that unites SL individuals throughout the world to celebrate survivors (anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer), remember loved ones and raise money for the fight against cancer.

And the TV channels of Second Life are coming together to produce a twenty-four telethon to cover this event, which you can watch on slartist.com.

  • The Telethon is covering the 24 hours of Relay. Live coverage is from 9am – 10pm (including the Luminaria ceremony at 9pm) on Saturday 19th, and from 6.00am till 11am on Sunday 20th, plus  on Saturday.
  • During that time, we’ll bring you news of the Relay from our studio – with information about all the events that are going on, together with trackside interviews with teams and sim designers.
  • And when we’re not live, we’ll be showing interviews with Chairs from the RFL Committee, classic clips from RFL history, and TV shows from Treet TV that have featured Relay for Life.

Hope Haven Heroes and Two Moon Paradise are delighted to invite you to the Hope Ball  in the Zen Garden, Two Moon Paradise, to celebrate survivors and caregivers on National Cancer Survivors Day on Sunday June 1st.

On Sunday, June 1, 2014, cancer survivors across the globe will unite to show the world what life after cancer looks like. This unique celebration will mark the 27th annual National Cancer Survivors Day. Thousands of people in hundreds of communities across the U.S. and abroad – and in Second Life – will hold celebrations on this day to honour cancer survivors and to show that there is life after a cancer diagnosis – and it’s something to celebrate.

National Cancer Survivors Day is an annual worldwide Celebration of Life. It is the one day each year that we come together to honour everyone who is living with a history of cancer. A ‘survivor’ is defined by the National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation, administrator for the celebration as anyone living with a history of cancer – from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life.

NCSD provides an opportunity for cancer survivors to connect with other survivors, celebrate milestones, and recognize the healthcare providers, family, and friends who have supported them along the way. It is a day for cancer survivors to stand together and show the world what life after cancer looks like.

NCSD is recognized by the American Cancer Society. See here for more information. And you can also visit the American Cancer Society island, which has been especially decorated for the day.

This year we have been running two contests – one for Photographs of the Faire, and a Story Story/Poetry competition too. Both these contests will close at midnight today (May 31st).

In the Photographic Competition, we are looking for the photographs that best capture the spirit of the sims – and the winners will be included in a calendar (with credits for the photographers) that will be created in real life using Cafe Presse and sold to raise money for Relay for Life. So this year, people really will be able to take the Faire home with them – and share it with their friends and family too!

You can find full details of the competition here (and note that the deadline was extended from May 11th – May 31st).

For the short story/poetry competition, the top entries will be published in the summer issue of Prim Perfect magazine, coming out in September 2014.

You story/poem can focus on one region – Sanctum, or Hopes Horizon or Heavenslough, for example – and ignore all the others. Or you might use the juxtaposition of two regions, or even draw on more of the Fairelands, as a whole vast realm, perhaps surrounding an inland sea. It’s up to you. And your story or poem can be sad or happy, wise or witty. It can make us laugh, cry, gasp, nod with agreement … or do all of these things by turns.

But we must have it by midnight today!

Starting Friday May 30th, The Sci Fi Alliance’s SL SciFi Convention begins a week of displays and events, this year benefitting Relay for Life.  Many fans of sci-fi gather in 6 sims showcasing builds on themes from Dr. Who, Star Trek, Stargate, Babylon 5, the world of steampunk, and all shades of imagination across the galaxies.

The opening ceremony is at 6pm today, Friday 30th, and the event runs till Sunday June 8th.  Start your exploration at any of the 6 hubs.  May you live long and prosper.
