Evensong Woods

Evensong Woods

Evensong Woods was, in some ways , one of the more conventional fantasy regions at the 2013 and perhaps for that reason did tend to be a little overlooked in reports, which is a shame, because it was beautifully conceived and built by Searlait Nitschke of Roawenwood, which specialises in fantasy, furniture, landscaping, clothing, and role-play accessories.

Elves in trees seems almost expected now – a vision that predates Tolkien, but is perhaps most powerfully realised in Lothlorien. The fact that we now expect elves to have tree homes is certainly a testimony to that – other writers might have placed fairies in trees (as in Barrie’s Peter Pan) but the elves usually occupied a separate kingdom – lying at the end of the bonny, bonny way that Thomas the Rhymer took – a route followed not only by innumerable ballads but also by writers as diverse as William Morris and Terry Pratchett.

Yet it was very appropriate at an event that drew together so many different genres of fantasy that Evensong Woods should be there, with its trees and carvings, and beautifully realised and Searlait has written a very beautiful post about it here, which I would urge you all to read.

Now available on the web – our latest episode, the second of our two visits to the amazing Fantasy Faire.

Saffia talked to designers Kayle Matzerath and Marcus Inkpen about the regions that they created, while Elrik learned about the amazing Fantasy Faire radio (and its rather unusual studio) from Zander Greene, and then had an escorted tour of the famed (notorious?) Explorers’ Club (Oriental Branch) by Martini Discovalante.

So – come and join us at 2pm.

Sign up for our talks!

Following the success of our discussion / interview programmes at the Home and Garden Expos for 2011 and 2012, and the Christmas Expos and the Birthdays … well, you get the picture!  At the 6th Home and Garden Expo, running from May 24th to June 3rd, we are planning a further series of talks with designers and breedable creators.

These talks will take place outside our very special Greek taverna on the Prim Perfect sponsored region. But we’ll be telling you more about that later!

We’re planning to host events at 3pm every day.  If you would really LOVE to give a presentation, but can’t make that time, contact us and we will see if we can fit you in.

We are happy to host talks, presentations, interviews, question and answer sessions.  It’s an opportunity for designers to share ideas, for people to meet their favourite creators, for communities to come together and talk about their culture and ideas.  We’re very open to hosting what YOU want to tell us about!

If you would like to be a part of our programme at the Expo, please complete this form with your topic and preferred dates and times. We will try to fit in as many people as we can!

The Streets of Lumenaria

The Streets of Lumenaria

I have a few last lovely pictures of the Fantasy Faire to post – like this view of Lumenaria. We saw a dragon boat flying over it yesterday … today we have a view from the ground.

Although most of those beautiful regions have gone now, swept away by the sand of time (and Linden Lab), one remains – and that is the Valley of Ish’nar where the Hunt is taking place!

If you were able to complete Part 1, wear the Hud you used then. The treasure chest icon on your Part 1 HUD must be open to get a free Part 2 HUD.

If you missed Part 1, you can purchase a Part 2 HUD with a donation to RFL of at least 150L  And the organisers are stressing that you should please READ your local chat when you attach the Part 2 HUD for instructions to activate it.

The Hunt was designed by Mad Pea, the story written by David Abbot, and the region itself was designed by Ryn Verwood – all three huge recommendations!

But first, let’s do a jigsaw!

Dragon ship over Lumenaria

Dragon boat over Lumenaria

Many people who visited Fantasy Faire enjoyed the stream that was playing. Some of the time this was DJs of course, and live musicians. But aside from that, there was a wonderfully evocative stream created by Zander Greene. And it was all broadcast from this beautiful dragon boat by Rynn Verwood.

The Faire has finished now – and it was heartbreaking watching the regions being taken down last night.  But it will, of course, live on in part when the second part of the Hunt opens (later today, hopefully), and in the stories that people are writing for the Fantasy Faire/Prim Perfect Shot Story Competition.  Why don’t you have a go yourself? There are pictures on Flickr to remind – and inspire you!

But, in the mean-time, let’s do a jigsaw.

Now available on the web – our latest episode, the first of two visits we’ll be paying to the amazing Fantasy Faire.

We visit the amazing Fantasy Faire (a visit filmed before the Faire actually opened) and talk to Zander Greene and Elicio Ember (the creator of the beautiful Titans’ Hollow as we explore some of the fascinating regions in the quiet days before they filled with eager visitors, and learn about the work and ideas that led to their creation.

At the time of writing, the amount raised by the Faire stands at more than 8,800,000 Lindens – more than US$35,600 or nearly £23,000. And all that raised in a virtual world.

We have worked wonders today. We went through the seven million Linden barrier. Ten hours later, we went through the eight million barrier. As I write, we are less than 650,000 from something incredible: the all-time record for ANY fundraising event in SL history. This record is ours for the taking, and we intend to do just that. We’re already laying plans. Stay tuned.

We leave the smoking tunnels of Dragonspire behind us, and stumble from the choking fumes into the the fresh air of the Valley of Ishnar. Filling our lungs with the fresh air we slip quickly through the valley, we will not stop here now. Instead our sights are on something more refreshing, a sorely needed infusion of happiness. We step into Lumenaria.

The sky settles to a misty orange glow, that should tell you immediately thay Kayle Matzerath, of Garden of Dreams, is behind this fantasy city. Kayle has created a wonderful medieval fantasy city that tells its story without words. A grand castle looks over a tiered garden beyond which narrow cobbled streets wind around the castle walls. Bunting hangs between houses, the bridges carry bunches of bright balloons. The city is preparing a celebration and it is for us to live the tale.

In creating the models for the region Kayle has built everything from mesh, the trees and flowers have a cleverly hand drawn feel about them that lends itself perfectly to the fairytale setting. The delightful gardens, with butterflies lead up to the grandly spectacular castle in which you can imagine the beautiful fairytale princess marrying her prince charming, somehow I cannot shift the expectation that I will see the animated ogre, Shrek, walking the streets here alongside his wise-cracking donkey pal. Instead of course, we had our own Faireland hereoes, Kayle in elf form,  and his wise-cracking penguin pal…Alia.

The detail in the buildings, the lovingly crafted houses and shops, right down to the fruit stalls show the love and attention that Kayle has poured into this project. What is more, the detail and complexity of the scenes have been created with customary frugality, Kayle himself has observed that the entire region, including the vendors could be put into a homestead sim. Perhaps, those of us impatiently awaiting a new Dream Scene can look upon this and acknowledge that it was time well spent, and accept that Kayle most certainly has not been idle.

This is the perfect place to conclude our adventure, the heroes are welcomed home, a great party is being arranged….

What an amazing adventure this Faire has been, beyond the wonderous creations of sim builders, the broad array of goods and items that we’ve bought, we have helped not only break but smash all our targets and records setting a new bar to be aimed at for the future.

There is of course one more stop on our journey, The Valley of Ishnar, the region dedicated to a special story that has unfolded during the Faire and which will continue on for another few weeks. We will take a look at the Valley tomorrow but for now we’ll say goodbye to the Faire and carry our fond memories into the future with us.

The Faire is over…Until next year…
