Don’t miss the recent Designing Worlds show where we visit we visit the wonderful Freeport Township of Flotsam, feed the Kraken, encounter the Nautilus and Captain Nemo’s underwater observatory, contemplate a trip to the moon and a voyage to the centre of the earth – and undertake an amazing underwater journey – all courtesy of the fabulous creative Aley!

Aley has – under a variety of guises – been an amazing creator in Second Life for a great many years, and the Freeport Township of Flotsam is a brilliant example of her skill, her inventiveness and her sense of fun! It’s a floating town in Blake Diego, with strong overtones of Jules Verne – as we discovered whenwe visit Nemo’s Observatory, Saffia explores the Nautilus and Elrik takes a perilous journey to the centre of the earth!

But there are other elements too which are wonderful to discover. Who can resist feeding the kraken (even if it takes a whale to satisfy his appetite), or dining yourself at one of the restaurants – McSushi, perhaps, with its dragon arches, or The White Whale (which serves excellent seafood)? Each building holds stories and surprises – some enchating, some alarming … what could have happened to the previous occupants of Stan’s Previously Owned Coffins?

As we discovered on last week’s show, Aley has also been busy decorating the waters of Blake’s Deep and we conclude by taking an underwater tour that leads us to a fantastic underwater mer carnival (the tour continues without us – but we couldn’t resist stopping off here!).

All in all, this is a fantastic show – and most of the items we see are on the Marketplace at AleyMart – and all absolutely free.

You can see more of Aley’s works at the Second Life 11th Birthday Community Celebrations. One of these is in The Blackened Mirror exhibit. As part of an amazing demonstration of Rescene (you really must get over there and try it out!) we have re-created the mad scientist’s laboratory that appeared in Episode 1 of Season 2.

And there are two exhibits devoted to Aley’s work – the historical All Things Aley, SL11B Branch, which focuses on the history of her wonderful creations as Aradia Asylum (2006 – 2008) when she was such a great part of founding the “hobo ethos” of producing high quality free content, as Aley Ariai (2008-2010) , as Lora Lemon, and most recently as Aley (2011 – present), in addition to presenting material on the Boardman themed community which was created back in the beta era of Second Life – and still exists today! And then there’s the Arcadia Asylum – Living Library & Freebie Center, a wonderful display by a group of like-minded individuals, working to preserve and catalogue the works Aley in all her incarnations, and to make these items available to all for free.

Today, Thursday 26th January, we are delighted to have three keynote interviews with leading Second Life residents with two sessions of Meet the Designer and then Meet the Community Talks in the Auditorium on SL11B Fascinate (either Stage 1 or Stage 2).

Meet Jessica at 1pm!

Meet Jessica at 1pm!

First of all, on Stage 1 at 1pmSLT we have Jessica Lyon, the Project Manager of Firestorm. Jessica will be talking with Saffia Widdershins about the recent announcement by Ebbe Linden that Linden Lab are working on a new platoform, designed as a successor (but not a replacement) for Second Life. Jessica will be talking about the meeting where thios was first raised, about some of the misconceptions that have arisen, and about her vision for the future of Second Life.

She may also be sharing a few thoughts on ways in which the Lindens could avoid some of the problems they have faced in Second Life!

Meet Beq at 2pm!

Secondly, at 2pmSLT, Beq Janus, the award winning designer who has created, among other things, a restruction of the famous Maison Horta, an award winning build at Relay for Life 2013, the steampunk fantasy of Asperatus for Fantasy Faire 2014 … and who is currently rebuilding the sewers of New Babbage in mesh (and tremendous detail) will be talking to Saffia Widdershins on Stage 2. We’ll also be talking about Beq’s work as a writer and photographer, and her work as a machinimist. It’s a chance to hear from an extraordinary talented creative.

Finally, at 5pm, Saffia will be talking on Stage 2to Jo Yardley of 1920s Berlin, who will be talking about her re-creation of a real historical community, and the challenges – and triumphs – this has entailed – as well as her role on the Drax Radio Files, and her plans for the future. And I daresay we’ll also be talking about the topic of the hour – the announcement of the new platform!

Join us today, Monday 17th March at 2pm at the Designing Worlds studio in Garden of Dreams for a special viewing party of today’s Designing Worlds show as we explore the beautiful Dreamscenes created by Kayle Matzerath.

Kayle has been creating his amazing Dreamscenes – a portable and expandable system of stunningly designed skyboxes – and landscapes for a number of years, and we have featured some of these as settings for shows – a Thanksgiving Dinner featured the Piano Bar and Dining Room, and the gorgeous library was used in The Blackened Mirror.

We also look at Kayle’s stunning work for Fantasy Faire.

His ability to move with the times and incorporate new ideas and developments in the platform has led to his latest creation (which I wrote about earlier in the year) the Atelier. And there’s a special surprise to be glimpsed through the windows here for all steampunk fans!

Designing Worlds visits New Babbage – and what can possibly go wrong with that?

Well, quite a lot – as Saffia and Elrik discover when Mr Merlin takes tea with a certain Dr Jekyll …

But all is not quite what it appears …

It’s a Christmas special with the addition of Mr Biggins, Mr Victor1st Mornington (as themselves) and Mr Da5id Abbot as Dr Jekyll. Plus some rather wonderful horses … Kalypso Whitesong, Betta Zapp. Dancer Inglewood and Chaerry Lastchance, trained by Miss H0neyheart Resident.
