A Steampunk Folly

A Steampunk Folly

One of the fun things of any large event like the Home and Garden Expo is discovering new and unexpected things. And so it was today. Wandering around the regions (mercifully, things have calmed down sufficiently that a walk at a European morning time is a pleasure and not a purgatory) I came across this lovely little … well, I would call it a kind of Folly.  It’s a room for entertaining friends, set inside a lantern, and it’s rather fun.

It’s created by Steaming Ahead/Gothic Musing and is one of the sadly few steampunk elements at this year’s Home and Garden Expo. There are some rather fun balloons too – do check it out on Home Expo 8.

But only, of course, after you have tackled the jigsaw!

Meshworx at the Expo

Meshworx at the Expo

Yesterday we were very traditional, with Cierra Anatine’s gorgeous manor house. Today we have gone very modern, with Loz Hyde’s Meshworx cube on Home Expo 3.

Loz was one of the first designers to start working in mesh – and his chandelier was one of the stand out “wow!” creations of last year’s Expo. This year he has gone for a very sleek modern look – with this fascinating cube design. It’s well woth checking out – as is his new main store – Meshworx.

And you can catch Loz talking about his work with Maxwell Graf, Kriss Lehmann and Cube Republic at the Prim Perfect Talk on Friday – back by popular demand!

But first – let’s do a jigsaw.

Now available on the web – our latest episode, as we explore a new region with a decidedly Vintage Retro theme.

The name of the region is Old Time Prims (as the owner of the region, Mila Edelman, is also the owner of that well known vintage store), but it is also known as Vintage Retro. It is drawing together a wealth of vintage and retro commercial ventures – and some that actually cross boundaries into real life, as we discover on the show.

Modelled on a bustling vintage European city, with echoes of Munich, Vienna and Budapest, it provides an intriguing home for a number of stores and vintage locations. Mila will be giving us a guided tour and an insight into how smaller stores with a strong theme can help one another – and themselves too!

Well, actually, there are several things that you could do … and some of them are related to filling out forms …

Art
Or perhaps you’d prefer to pick up your camera and enter our special competition to design a new fraphical strapline for Prim Perfect.  Our old graphic was created in 2007 – and Second Life – as well as other virtual worlds – has moved on since then!  We are offering a prize of L$5000 for the best one we receive, featuring images of Second Life (and other virtual worlds) in 2013. And Froukje Hoorenbeeke has generously matched that prize – our winner will also receive a voucher for L$5000 to spend at her gorgeous store, Dutchie!

We are offering five further prizes of L$1000 each for people who share with us pictures of the best indivdiual style icons in homes, gardens and landscapes. So get out there and record your absolute favourites!

You’ll find full details of the competition (which closes on January 15th) here.

Romance
And don’t forget to complete our special survey of how you met (whether in Second Life, real life or somewhere else entirely!). We are planning a feature article on this for our Valentine issue, and we’ve already received some great stories – make sure that yours joins them!

Business
Finally, today (January 10th) is the last day to complete the survey being run by the Centre for Business Development who are gathering information that will be useful to use in identifying issues and provide them with what they hope will be a good basis to start developing strategies.

The Centre is is a collaborative group of business people working together to identify and improve areas that may be hindering growth in Second Life. Their aim is to be proactive in improving business growth, opening avenues of communication with Linden Lab and enriching experiences for SL residents.

So … what are you waiting for? There’s lots of things to do … and later, there may even be a jigsaw …
