What lies ahead for the heroes of The Blackened Mirror?

First of all, at 1pm, Elrik Merlin will be talking to Zander Greene and Aisling Sinclair, two of the cast of the popular Treet TV drama series The Blackened Mirror. Zander (in real life actor Scott Simpson) plays Harland Quinn, the private investigator in a big dieselpunk city who is hired by the mysterious Alais Allen (played by Aisling).  They will be talking about the show and the upcoming series but … no spoilers! The show, by the way, is written by author David Abboy, who is also travelling The Long Walk at this year’s Community Celebration.

Then, at 3pm, in the next in our series of Ekphrasis talks, Rowan Derryth will be talking to the very talented film-maker Draxtor Despres , who has been drawing plaudits for his new media series, the Drax Files. You can see more details of that talk here.

Non Profit Commons at the Auditorium

And last for today, at 4pm SLT, Saffia Widdershins will be talking to several members of Nonprofit Commons about their work and about the role of nonprofits in Second Life.

The other display is a collection of pictures from Prim Perfect’s 48 issues, produced over the course of the last six years, and the core of our inspiration for the exhibit which was In My Second Life, taken from the Beatles’ Song …

There are places I remember all my life

Over the years, a wide range of talented photographers have worked for us, including PJ Trenton, Honour McMillan, Wildstar Beaumont, Twisted Lemon, Wren Carling, Judith Lefevre, Beq Janus, GM Nikoiaidis, Stephen Venkmann, Raven Haalan, Ceejay Writer, Winona Wiefel, Paolo Bade. This installation is a tribute to their work.

We wanted to share these with you because – in our Second Lives … we loved them all.

But we also wanted to issue a challenge – we will give a prize of L$5000 to the person who can identify the largest number of images in the six panels at the northern end of the Prim Perfect installation.

If more than one person has the highest score, we’ll hold a draw.

You will find all the images in Panels 2 – 6 in past issues of Prim Perfect magazine.  The images in Panel 1 (the double row on the left wall) come from the magazine and from the blog too!

How do I enter?
Visit the Prim Perfect exhibit at SL10B Astonish, and study the pictures.  Write down all the ones you know (it’s fun to do this with friends too!).

Even if you haven’t been in Second Life that long, you will be able to find older images in back issues of the magazine. And it will be a great way of learning more about the amazing builds in Second Life!

Organise the ones you can identify by Panel (1 – 6) and then from top to bottom, left to right.

When you have as many as you can identify, send a notecard labelled Prim Perfect SL10B Contest to Zadira Barzane inworld, or by email to primperfect@gmail.com.  You may not need to identify every location to win the prize – just send as many as you can!

Helpful Hints:
You will be able to find the images either in the magazines, or on the blog (a few). And you don’t even need to spend hours in the build (as miss some of the amazing builds at SL10B). You can take photos of the panels and then study them at your leisure.

Closing date for the contest is July 5th, and the results will be published in our August magazine.

Xandi Mars, Cklass of 2003!

First of all, at 1pm, Saffia Widdershins will be talking to Xando Mars of Del Sol Furniture – who, we hasten to say, doesn’t look like this these days!  Xandi was one of the earliest users of Second Life, going all the way back to 2003.  She’ll be talking about this – and about having been a top furniture designer in Second Life for ten years.

Linden Gift Vendor

Firstly, in special Linden vendors set up around the sims, you’ll find exclusive limited Linden gifts (some are also available on the Marketplace), but each is only available for a limited time. We can’t tell you when an item will be ready for grabbing or even what might be offered at any given time. You’ll find one vendor near the Welcome Area on SL10B Beguile – or have fin hunting down the others – and see some very cool exhibits on the way!

Secondly, we need you to vote in our Photo Contest! You might remember that we asked you to take photographs that matched the theme: “Looking Forward, Looking Back”. We have selected the best of these and have placed them out for you to vote on. Which do YOU like best? Come and register your choice!

The Board is located near the Welcome Area in Beguile – and maybe you can pick up a free gift from the Linden vendor at the same time!

sachi Vixen of Adam n Eve

Firstly, at 1pm SLT, I will be talking to sachi Vixen, of the fabulous Adam n Eve store. Some of my earliest outfits in Second Life came from Adam n Eve – I was delighted to find a store that made beautiful clothes for the businesswoman, as well as elegant evening gowns.

Then, at 3pm SLT Rowan Derryth will be talking to the artist Gracie Kendall – you can see more details of that here.

Just Meshing About …

At 1.15pm, we will be talking to some of the masters (and a  mistress) of mesh creation – Maxwell Graf, Cain Maven and Froukje Hoorenbeeke.

(Please note that the start is slightly delayed to allow everyone to attend the Opening Ceremony – and flags will be going up just outside the Auditorium.)

The wonderful A’stra Stage

At 4pm, we will be talking to the people behind the A’stra Stage at this event (also known as the Main Stage and the Turtle Stage!) – Flea Bussy and Toady Nakamura, the janitors of the amazing Grendels.  “As goes Grendels, so goes the grid,” Philip Rosedale (aka Philip Linden) famously remarked.  Come along at 4pm to find out why!

As the Second Life community celebrates this milestone anniversary, it’s a great time to reflect on the contributions this virtual world has made to contemporary art. This year, my third year of interviewing artists at the birthday celebrations, I am very excited to welcome a group of talented and seasoned artists whose work perfectly represents the diversity and potential of virtual art, and particularly the ways in connects to practice in the physical world.

MONDAY 17 June: GRACIE KENDAL (Kristine Schomaker)
We will kick things off chatting with Gracie about how her work has evolved from showing her paintings on prims, to a Master’s thesis, to now displaying works in a Beverly Hills art gallery that are directly inspired by her virtual creations. It will be a great start to talking about augmented reality, which will be a running theme throughout the week.

TUESDAY 18 June: WHISKEY MONDAY
I’m incredibly excited to talk to the talented and quite frankly hysterical Whiskey Monday on Tuesday. Those familiar with her stunning and surreal images might be surprised to learn just how short a time she’s been making virtual photographs. We will learn more about how she began, and how she works, and maybe a little about what makes her tick.

WEDNESDAY 18 June: DRAXTOR DESPRES
Drax has been a tour de force in SL media for several years, but I think his series the Drax Files is not only some of his best work, but is critically important in documenting what is happening in SL today. I’m looking forward to interviewing the interviewer, and hope to pick up a thing or two!

THURSDAY 18 June: IAN PAHUTE (Ian Upton)
Ian is an artist and technologist who also has a long history of creating virtual art, and he’s most recently broken the virtual wall with his exhibition EXTRACT/INSERT which was shown at both the LEA and in ‘real life’ at the Herbert Art Gallery in Coventry. I had the pleasure of visiting this piece from both sides, and we will chat about this work and where it might go from here.

FRIDAY 18 June: CHIC AEON
Chic makes some of the best machinima around, and now she’s embarked on a project at the LEA to create a dedicated space for machinimatography. We will talk about this groundbreaking new media art form, and get advice from her about how budding film makers might get involved.

SATURDAY 18 June: BRYN OH
On Saturday I’ll be talking to Bryn… About everything. What’s more to say here, it’s Bryn!

In this second visit we talk to the co-organiser of the Expo, Heavenly Villa, and to Cortiez Brandiss, who organised the associated (and highly successful) Breedables Fair. And Saffia talks to Judith Chestnut and Jaimy Hancroft of the Dwarfins, one of the popular “breedables” at the Fair, while Elrik met Mewroo Resident and Levio Serenity of the very popular Meeroos.

Then we talk to Troy Vogel who created a beautiful and very unusual House for the Expo, before finishing with the very moving Lantern Ceremony that occurred each day of the Expo – a chance for reflection and commemoration of those who have left us and celebration of those who remain.

The Sl10B Community Celebrations open today at 12 noon SLT – with music on all four stages!

And at 1pm, there will be a special Opening Ceremony – and we want you there to be a part of it.

So that as many people as possible can share in the Opening, there will be a very simple ceremony taking place in most of the twenty sims.

Across the sims, there will be groups of flags. At 1pm SLT, all the flags will be raised to symbolise the start of SL10B CC. The flags will fly throughout the week, not to be lowered again until the end of the event.

Raising and lowering a flag is a very simple ceremony, but an important one. It marks the beginning and end of the Olympics and other special events; in some countries, the raising and lowering of a flag might mark the beginning and end of a school day. In Second Life, doing this on as many sims as possible, all at the same time, means that as many people can attend as possible — and it is symbolic of the way so many people in so many countries can come together in Second Life and share the experience. So we will all share the experience of seeing the flags lift.

You can choose your own vantage point, as you can see a group of flags from almost everywhere. You’ll find them positioned near the edge of sims – and we’ll be posting a full list of locations soon both to the groups and on the blog.

We hope you will be able to join in this very special Opening.
