Prim Perfect: Issue 46 – March 2013 – cover

Welcome to our second issue of 2013 - and more of our new range of features in Prim Perfect magazine, as well as those you know and love!

This month of theme is Art – and we’ve expanded that to also look at textures.

And our inworld issue this month is full of gifts and tools for you, many designed to help you create you own items, as shown in the magazine! So as you read throughh the magazine, watch out for those gift tags  on the left or right of the screen – clicking on them will bring you something very special!

On the fine art front, Rowan Derryth supplies an Overview of Virtual Art, and a guide to some of the art that you might choose to display in your virtual home in Home is Where the Art Is.

Honour McMillan interviews the well-known Second Life artist Bryn Oh, and talks to a comparative newcomer to the art scene, Livio Oak Korobase. And I visit our Designers of the Month, Marcus Inkpen and Sharni Azalee, who combine fine art with superlative design on their beautiful region, The Looking Glass.

In addition, Honour McMillan supplies an introduction to the Linden Endowment for the Arts, while Tricia Aferdita explores ten amazing art galleries that you should visit.

If your tastes run to textures, you’ll find plenty of information in this month’s magazine.  Ceejay Writer interviews Hyasynth Tiramisu on the subject of the beautiful textures she creates for Silent Sparrow – more than that – Hyasynth not only gives a masterclass on creating textures – she has also supplied a very special texture free to Prim Perfect readers that you can use to decorate your own home.

In addition, Ethan Westland looks at the importance of textures (and gives away a few secret texture-buying locations!) while Qwis Greenwood, in the second of our series promoting small business around the grid, has found three very exciting and very different texture creators to share with our readers.

Prim Perfect: Issue 46 - March 2013 - Building a skybox

Prim Perfect: Issue 46 – March 2013 – Building a skybox

In our continuing series on building your own home, our designer (and phenomenal builder) Winona Wiefel will be teaching you how to create a door and windows and add them to the basic skybox that you created in Part 1 of the series.

And to help you with your building, there’s not only a copy of the skybox (which you can use as a model) but there’s also a pack of textures for you to experiment with too!

Prim Perfect: Issue 46 - March 2013 - Building in Mesh

Prim Perfect: Issue 46 – March 2013 – Building in Mesh

We also have the second in our major series on Mesh. Beq Janus supplies a simple entry to the world of mesh, touching on buying full perm mesh from marketplace with a rudimentary guide to texturing those – and giving a brief view of in world tools for mesh.

And she also supplies a mesh chair for you to start practising texturising too!

Then there are reports on the fantastic One Billion Rising event — the Second Life version of the global event that celebrates women even as it raises awareness of the issue of violence against women. And Beq Janus looks at the opening of Relay for Life and tells us all about the upcoming season of events.

Prim Perfect: Issue 44 - Cover

Prim Perfect: Issue 44 – Cover

The Christmas issue of Prim Perfect is now out – and it’s filled with amazing things to see and places to go this season!

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, Jack Frost nipping at your nose… unless, of course, you’re holding a braai in South Africa or a barbie on the beach in Aus. Or glumly contemplating the rain in England …

But don’t worry! Because just a few clicks away in Second Life, you can enter the winter wonderland of your dreams, with snow piled thick and deep, and blazing fires in welcoming homes – a time to sparkle at parties, making sure you’re as bright and dazzling as any Christmas tree ornament.

Prim Perfect: Issue 44 - Winter Wonderlands

Prim Perfect: Issue 44 – Winter Wonderlands

And so, for Christmas, Honour McMillan, Ceejay Writer and Qwis Greenwood have set out across the grid to explore some of the most beautiful winter regions they could find – and they’ve found some very unusual ones too!

Prim Perfect: Issue 44 - Christmas Photostory

Prim Perfect: Issue 44 - A Tiny Christmas Tale

Prim Perfect: Issue 44 – A Tiny Christmas Tale

We also have a couple of specials for you – a couple of heartwarming Christmas stories – The Tale of the Tinies’ Christmas Pudding by Qwis Greenwood – which proved to be very far from a tiny Christmas pudding after all!

And we have a special Christmas photo story from Wildstar Beaumont (and me), taken from the camera work of Elrik Merlin and Beq Janus. We have taken the Designing Worlds Christmas special episode and turned it into a rather special photo story … of a coal shortage, a dangerous (and stolen) book, and New Babbage’s legend of the Steam Santa …

Winona Wiefel is here to tell you how to make your own Christmas card (and we are supplying the tools to help you make your own). And if you’re looking to do something more than simply explore over Christmas, Rosamoo Mendelsohn has a round-up of all the available hunts, while Tricia Aferdita tells us all about a fantastic holiday event at Art India to raise money for an Indian children’s charity.

Prim Perfect: Issue 44 – Not the End of the World

For an alternative take on the end of 2012, we have Cain Maven speculating on what we might do if the world were to end!

There’s exciting news from our TV shows, Designing Worlds and Happy Hunting!, available on Treet TV. And there’s also news of our interactive media experience, The Blackened Mirror — part TV show, part game!

Our team of talented photographers, led by Judith Lefevre, PJ Trenton, Winona Wiefel, Wildstar Beaumont, and Honour McMillan, bring you some of the most artistic eye candy from across the metaverse.

All this with News From the Grid and more!

And thank you to all those who voted for us at the Avi Choice Awards. We are so proud to have won the award for Favourite Magazine, Newspaper and Periodical. It’s a tremendous boost for us – especially as the competition was so terrific. We love producing Prim Perfect – and we love the fact that you clearly enjoy reading it too.

Prim Perfect's Christmas Party

Prim Perfect’s Christmas Party

Tonight was the last night of the SL Christmas Expo, and we celebrated by holding the Prim Perfect Christmas Party in the gorgeous Prim Perfect Pavilion, designed by Eliza Wierwight, where we have seen so many fantastic talks over the last few weeks.

We pushed back the benches, hoovered the carpet and invited Vic Mornington in to play the tunes.  And then we partied – and it was awesome.

Let’s do the jigsaw!

Prim Perfect Christmas Party

Prim Perfect Christmas Party

Today is the last day of the Second Life Christmas Expo. We’ve had a great time – a wide range of terrific speakers and some fascinating conversations – so many, many thanks to all who spoke = and to the audience who came to listen!

Now on the last day, we’re going to PARTY in our gorgeous Prim Perfect Pavilion at the Expo! We’ve pushed the benches back to the wall, ordered in some extra egg nog and a new Christmas Yule log and are all set to dance – well, if not the night away, for a couple of hours later.  Victor Mornington will be our DJ from 3 – 5pm – we hope to see you all there!

We’ll also be holding the draw for the Quest in the last issue of Prim Perfect, so someone will be 5.000 Lindens richer by the end of the party!

And make sure you don’t miss the Prim Perfect Christmas Party which will be in the beautiful Prim Perfect Pavilion from 3pm – 5pm (there are details on the blog too).

We’ve had a wonderful time there, with a wide range of talks by some terrific people – here I am talking to Froukje Hoorenbeek over the dinner table that she brought with her!

The Untroubled Sound, photograph by Honour Macmillan

The Untroubled Sound

Today’s jigsaw comes from a post on Honour Macmillan’s blog – Honour’s Post Menopausal View (of Second Life). In the post – On Movies & Magic & My Big Mouth in Second Life – she reflects on several different things, including working on The Blackened Mirror, and her upcoming talk at the Prim Perfect Pavilion. It happened last night, and anyone who knows Honour will not be in the least surprised when I tell them that it was absolutely fascinating as she talked about her methodology in selecting the places she visited – and she left us with a clutch of landmarks too.

The later conversation, with Maxwell Graf, Loz Hyde, Kriss Lehmann and Cube Republic (who joined s on stage) was also fascinating in a different way, and could lead to some exciting developments for people who are interested in learning more about creating mesh.  More on that later.

We have one last talk in the Pavilion tonight (with Edward Pearse at 3pm – I’ll be posting about that later), and then on Wednesday, the last night of the Expo, we will be having a party from 3pm – 5pm  in the beautiful Pavilion that Eliza Wierwight created for us … to celebrate the Expo, the Pavilion, Prim Perfect and … Christmas!

Let’s do a jigsaw.

Today the talks in the gorgeous Prim Perfect Pavilion are at 3pm, when Saffia Widdershins will be talking to Honour Macmillan of Honour’s Post Menopausal View of Second Life, and at 5pm, when she will be talking to a trio of mesh-enthusiastic designers about their work (and, I suspect, other things as well!): Maxwell Graf of Rustica, Kriss Lehmann ofBotanical and Loz Hyde of Meshworx.

Meet Honour

Meet Honour

Honour Macmillan is the writer of the very popular blog, Honour’s Post Menopausal View of Second Life, for which she travels the grid finding new and remarkable places – frequently very beautiful.  She is also Deputy Editor of Prim Perfect, and an amazing organiser (and trainer) of volunteers for events that have ranged from Burn 2 to Second Life birthdays – including SL9B.

Meet the Designers

Meet the Designers

Last week we had a fantastic discussion with Max and Loz, and Kriss eventually joined us on stage. It started at 3pm SLT – the host bailed at 7pm, whimpering it was 3am in the UK, and the guests carroed on with the audience until 8pm!

So we’ve invited this energetic, informative, enthusiastic and hugely talented group back for a second session of talking to and with our audience.  And Saffia reserved the right to go to bed at a …erm … reasonable hour – after that, it’s up to you!

We have a full programme of talks coming up at the Expo – make sure that you don’t miss them! And please note that there have been a couple of recent changes … including one “back by popular demand”.
