Join us at 2pm SLT today, Monday 30th January, for the new episode of Designing Worlds at our studio in Garden of Dreams, when we’ll be visiting the beautiful estate of Rosehaven, which has recently celebrated its tenth anniversary.

Perhaps the name may be a little unfamiliar to you? That is because until recently, the estate was known as Winterfell, a name it took in 2016, long before a certain television programme had made the name widely known.

We talk to the estate owner Selena Anansi about the reasons for the name change, and about why her voice sounds strangely familiar!

Rosehaven is a estate of mystery and romance, with some dark undertones. We take a look at builds old and new (including some new mews cottages), and discuss the different aspects of this lovely fantasy estate. We visit some of the residents in their homes – including Elizabeth, the Duchess of Trikassi, Mr Podruly Peccable and our very own Wildstar Beaumont who was one of the very earliest residents of the estate!

And we take several tours of the waterways to see some of the magnificent castles and other builds.

As we go we talk about roleplay as opposed to lifestyle, and talk about the role that storytelling plays in Rosehaven.

We can promise you a really lovely show so do join us to watch it at 2pm SLT.

If you would like to visit the Rosehaven Estate for yourself, the recommended starting point is Rosehaven Castle.

Or – if you can’t attend in person – tune in to the web at 2pm SLT on Monday for a showing on SLartist or on Treet – or catch it later in the week on our shows page on the Treet.tv web site at http://treet.tv/shows/designingworlds, on the SLArtist.com channel, the Aview TV Designing Worlds channel – or on the Designing Worlds blog.

Maxwell’s Graf’s famous island of Rustica, complete with the beautiful castle which houses the great Rustica store, has been on the move!

Max has decided that the darkly beautiful region of Winterfell, located to the north of Caledon, will provide a fitting location for his work.

Winterfell moves in theme from dark Victorian in the south of the estate to a more medieval inspired ambiance further north, with elements of dark fantasy at times. Throughout it is stunning beautiful – as we found on Designing Worlds when we visited Winterfell in March 2011.

In actual fact, this marks the fulfillment of a very longterm plan, as Maxwell explains:
“I feel like it is where I have belonged all along. I had initially designed the castle to be a gateway between Caledon and Winterfell, with the canyon under the store being a passage for ships, but for various reasons we were unable to complete that. After all this time, I am extremely excited and happy to be part of such a wonderful and longstanding community of people, many of whom are already friends. It’s like coming home.”

And such are the wonders of Second Life that your landmarks to Rustica will still work, as will the Rustica slurl (but if you have Rustica in your picks, you will need to update that).

Join us on a journey to the dark beauties of Winterfell, a fantasy region that ranges from dark Victorian to the high fantasy of the northern forests.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

We were joined on our journey by Serra Anansi, the Senschelf of Winterfell (and for an explanation of that title, you will need to see the show!) and Captain Wildstar Beaumont, a long-time supporter of both Winterfell and Designing Worlds (who found it fascinating to be on the other side of the cameras!). The Captain, of course, may be better known to some of you as the avatar behind Ralph Montcalm, hero in the web comic, The Quest for the Golden Prim.

We managed to see quite a lot of this fascinating region, even if the seas did prove rather stormy when we took to the famous Winterfell Ferry (recently chosen by Steamlanders as the Most Romantic Location in the Steamlands). So make sure you watch it soon!

We’ll be exploring the region on foot and by water as we take the Winterfell ferry, which was recently voted the Most Romantic Place to be in the Steamlands in the Valentine’s issue of The Primgraph magazine.

For the show we’ll be joined by the Senschelf herself, Serra Anansi, the owner of Winterfell, and by Captain Wildstar Beaumont, long term resident and supporter of Winterfell, and a seasoned sea-goer (let’s hope he can steer us through those rough sim crossings!).

We’ll be seeing some beautiful estates and open areas, and learning all about the very special community that is Winterfell.

Cape Wrath joins Winterfell and Caledon Earlier today, almost (but not quite) quietly, a significant development in the Second Life grid happened when two of the major land masses in the fantasy worlds actually connected with each other by joining sims, so that a narrow channel of water is all that is needed to cross from one to the other.

The Independent Republic of Caledon (Guvnah: Desmond Shang), a collection of 33 regions (or sims) with a primarily Victorian steampunk theme has joined with Winterfell (owner: Serra Anansi), the 10 sim state with a darkly medieval theme inspired by the novels of George RR Martin in the sequence A Song of Fire and Ice.

The joining of the two has long been a dream of both Desmond Shang and Serra Anansi, who are long time friends. Indeed, it was Desmond who urged Serra to set up the Winterfell sims in the first place, as she told Prim Perfect readers in the October edition of the magazine: “My friend Desmond Shang (of Caledon) got tired of me always talking about how I would set up an island if I had one, and he finally said ‘Just do it already!!’ So I did.”

Looking from Cape Wrath to WinterfellSo it was a real treat for me this morning to stand beside Serra on the cliffs of Caledon Cape Wrath and gaze out over the narrow sound at the snowy slopes of Winterfell Absinthe (the green hills of Cape Wrath suuggest an interesting micro-climate here; probably snow does not stick because the rocks are still cooling after their eruption from the seafloor).

We stood and gazed and shared our excitement at watching this key stage in a carefully nnurtured project come into existence. Caledon’s expansion has been slowly northward, with the recent development of Caledon Morgaine being followed by the ongoing development of Caledon Brigadoon. On the Winterfell side, the new and most southerly sim of Winterfell Absinthe has broken with the medieval tradition to follow a path closer to the nineteenth century Gothic, thus linking Winterfell and Caledon’s themes.

Looking to Cape Wrath from WinterfellSo there was much to celebrate this morning. And having gazed for a while, I pulled a handy felucca out of my Inventory (really, never leave home without one) and Serra and I sailed across the strip of water.

No photo shots of that – I was feeling too queasy from the determination of the boat to turn round and round, and run (very fast) before the ever-veering wind. To say nothing of the fact that it was leaking – badly.

Serra very kindly too the tiller, and after that our progress was somewhat swifter. Still, I hink you can see I was not quite my usual photographically competent self – that tree (she says disapprovingly) is somewhat blurred. Still, we were both delighted at having made the crossing so simply, and so easily.

I was especially pleased to be present – not least because Winterfell was the Sim of the Month in our October magazine, and – in a very few days now -Caledon will be the focus of our new December issue!
