There are many, many reasons why we rise.

Because, in Russia, MPs have backed a bill reducing the punishment for some forms of domestic violence, despite protests from rights groups.

Because, in India, more than 34,000 cases of rape were reported in 2015 (and think how many will go unreported).

Because, in the United Kingdom, government support for charities supporting women has been slashed and prosecutors are failing to pursue cases involving domestic violence.

Because, in the US – and around the world – women’s rights are under threat under the new US government.

Because, all around the world, women are faced with violence, exploitation, discrimination and repression.

And that’s before we think about the individual reasons why we rise.

The teacher or priest or or boss whose hand brushed a little too intimately a little too often for comfort.  The uncle or stepfather or father who wanted his “special” kisses. The boyfriend who wanted to push us to places we didn’t want to go, and told us, “everyone does it” or accused us of being prudish. The man in the street who thought he could jeer or call out obscenities or just order us to look the way he wanted us to look – “Smile, darlin’!” The boss who paid us less and asked more. of us. The firms that demand we wear make up or short skirts or high heels because our ability to do our job professionally is not enough.

On 14th February, we will be Rising. Women and Men together, we’ll be Rising in Solidarity with women around the world.
