Join us at 2pm SLT today, Monday 20th February, for the new episode of Designing Worlds at our studio in Garden of Dreams, when we’ll be visiting the fascinating Second Life Museum of Nuclear Warfare.

This is the first episode of a two part show (the second will be shown later in the series) as we discover a part of the wealth of information and installations that the Museum hosts.

You might expect it to be all about the weapons, but in fact it’s much broader than that, as we discover through talking to the Director and Curator of the Museum, OtakuSenpai Button.

In this first show we explore the reasons why Otaku established the Museum before we take a look at the background to the Manhattan Project which led to the development of the first atomic bomb and – subsequently – to the two bombs that were dropped on Japan at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. We then look at the work of nuclear reactors, and learn something of the background to nuclear accidents such as Chernobyl and Three Mile Island.

It’s a fascinating show – both in terms of the content Otaku has gathered, and also in terms of demonstrating how Second Life can be used for a learning experience.

Time Portals, photographed by Wildstar Beaumont

Time Portals, photographed by Wildstar Beaumont

The latest episode of Designing Worlds – when we explore Time Portals, the fascinating new region created by Jo Yardley (creator of the very popular 1920s Berlin Project) – is now on the web!

There are three portals already open – with a link to Berlin itself. Each portal has a distinct time and theme, although not so firmly structured as Berlin, which echoes a single year at the end of the Weimar Republic. The idea behind the time portals is to enjoy experiences of different periods, but also to shop or possibly live in a congenial environment.

And, because this us created by Jo, there are plenty of places to gather for social intercourse and partying!

You can explore the Time Portals from the central location at: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Time%20Portal/128/128/1930

Rosehaven Estate, photographed by Wildstar Beaumont

Rosehaven Estate, photographed by Wildstar Beaumont

The latest episode of Designing Worlds – a visit to the the beautiful estate of Rosehaven, which has recently celebrated its tenth anniversary – is now on the web!

And if the name is a little unfamiliar to you, that’s because until recently, the estate was known as Winterfell, a name it took in 2006, long before a certain television programme had made the name widely known.

Rosehaven is a estate of mystery and romance, with some dark undertones as we discover when we take a look at builds old and new (including some new mews cottages), and discuss the different aspects of this lovely fantasy estate. We talk to the estate owner Selena Anansi and visit some of the residents in their homes – including Elizabeth, the Duchess of Trikassi, Mr Podruly Peccable and our very own Wildstar Beaumont who was one of the very earliest residents of the estate!

Join us at 2pm SLT today, Monday 23rd January, for the new episode of Designing Worlds at our studio in Garden of Dreams – for the first show in the new season, when we’ll be paying a visit to Virtual Ability.

We’ll be hearing from Gentle Heron, one of the three founders of Virtual Ability, how the Iasland – and the nonprofit – came to be founded, and something of the design principles that underlie the islands, making them accessible to many kinds of disabilities. And we’ll be learning how they support new residents coming in to Second Life too.

We take a look at Health Island and explore the reading rooms, libraries and displays of various kinds – and above all the Path of Support that offers links the the myriad organisations that have a Second Life presence for a wide range of conditions.

Finally, accompanied by Gentle Heron and Suellen Heartsong, we visit a fascinating – and very informative – research project that has been developed on Virtual Health Adventures with Virtual Ability supporting a research project on diabetic foot health – a really important issue for the growing number of people with diabetes.

It all makes for a really interesting start to our Designing Worlds season – so do join us to watch it at 2pm SLT.

The latest episode of Designing Worlds – where we look back at the stunning builds that we saw at the Relay for Life of Second Life weekend at the end of July – is now on the web.

Sadly, we only had time to visit a few of the great builds, and talk to a small number of the talented creators behind them – we just wish we could have shown everything. Thankfully, our wonderful photographer Wildstar Beaumont was on hand to ensure that we have many more on our slide show!

Virtually News with AvaJean Westland
Virtually News with AvaJean Westland” is a mock/spoof news piece machinima created by actress/writer Gameela Wright. Filmed exclusively in Second Life, in the vein of SNL’s “Weekend Update” and “The Onion News Network,” AvaJean’s irreverent take on current events and pop culture pushes the boundaries while using animation as the filter.

Biography
Gameela Wright (pronounced “Guh-MEAL-uh”) is an actress and writer based out of New York. She began acting in theater, then moved into commercials, voice overs, television and film. Some of her on-camera credits include:

TV: Blue Bloods, The 3 Law & Order series, The Blacklist, Members Only (new series)
Film: Admission, John Wick, Shelter
Commercials: Staples, FedEx, Ally Bank, GoDaddy.com

As her Second Life alter ego AvaJean Westland, she performs live theater with the Avatar Repertory Theater Company (ART). She has worked as a voice actor or avatar puppeteer for The Blackened Mirror, Running Lady Productions, Chantal Harvey, Island Rain Studios, and Alfonso Kohn.

She created her own production umbrella, Virtual Girl Productions and has collaborated with Suzy Yue of Running Lady Studios on machinima projects such as “The Twilight Sim” and “Name That Schmuck!”

In addition, she created machinima for the Project Homeless campaign (“The Quiet Dark Wind”) and SciFi Film Festival (“Centuries Past”) in conjunction with Screen My Shorts and The University of Western Australia (UWA). “Centuries Past” took home two awards.

It is her hope to use machinima as a way to bridge real and second life and to help cement machinima as a form of animation that appeals to all.

Yes, Designing Worlds is back for a whole new season – and we’re inviting you to to join us today, Monday 8th September at 2pm SLT at the Designing Worlds studio in Garden of Dreams as we look back at the stunning builds that we saw at the Relay for Life of Second Life weekend at the end of July.

Wildstar and Saffia were both thrilled to be awarded two of the first ever Community Champion Awards at the Wrap Up for this year’s Relay for Life of Second Life. The other recipients of this award were Stingray Raymaker and Daniel Voyager. Saffia says: “That’s very awesome company for me to be keeping! I was so privileged to receive this award – working with Relay for Life of Second Life is not just a pleasure, it’s a privilege.”

Saffia also won another award – Smell the Roses – The Clown Awards – for her Twerking for a Cause. This was a moment at the telethon captured by Petlove Petshop. She was wearing my dinkie avatar (a cute little cat) for one of the hours and someone mentioned the fact that Saffia could twerk as a dinkie. So it was agreed that if the telethon team raised 10,000 Lindens (the Second Life virtual currency – it would be about US440) by the top of the hour, the dinkie would twerk. By the top of the hour, people watching the telethon had donated a total of 22,000 lindens (around US$900) and … the dinkie twerked.

And in other video news, Elrik and Saffia were challenged to the Ice Bucket challenge by Nikki Mathieson. You can see the results below!

Saffia and Elrik decided to donate their challenge to the charity Water Aid. Saffia says – “Here in the UK, it’s become customary to choose which charity to donate your Ice Bucket challenge to. While we are both supportive of the work done by ALS, we decided that we would like to raise awareness of a charity connected with clean water – something we wish as a blessing for people at the end of every Designing Worlds show. We’re therefore making our donation to Water Aid – and you can read here about the impact that Ice Bucket Challenges are having on the work of this vitally important nonprofit. And we’re proud to say no real water was wasted in our taking the challenge!*”

This is a fun and beautiful start to our new season – make sure that you don’t miss it!

Or – if you can’t attend in person – tune in to the web at 2pm SLT on Monday for a showing on SLartist or on Treet – or catch it later in the week on our shows page on the Treet.tv web site at http://treet.tv/shows/designingworlds, on the SLArtist.com channel, the Aview TV Designing Worlds channel – or on the Designing Worlds blog.
