Join us at 2pm SLT today, Monday 20th February, for the new episode of Designing Worlds at our studio in Garden of Dreams, when we’ll be visiting two places – the MadPea International Food Fair, and the amazing cause it is supporting – Feed a Smile.

We visit the Feed a Smile region and talk to Brique Topaz – Brique Zeiner in real life, who is the the Founder and Chairwoman of the German charity Leben und Lernen in Kenia, Live and Learn in Kenya International, whose project Feed a Smile is, and which is based on the shores of Lake Nakuru in Kenya, where they are building a school for local children, through sponsorship of individual children, and through events in Second Life, such as the International Food Fair.

Brique shows us around areas that are re-creations of the work being done on the ground in Africa, and explains how the Food Fair will be supporting the vital work of building a new kitchen for the school, and we’ll be seeing some films of the work as well.

Then we travel to the International Food Fair and join the organiser, Kestrel Keiroz, to learn what is going on there, with stores, an art gallery and regular music events, and we see some of the amazing food-related items you can purchase (with the money going to Feed a Smile).

The latest episode of Designing Worlds – when we visiting the fascinating Second Life Museum of Nuclear Warfare – is now on the web!

You might expect it to be all about the weapons, but in fact it’s much broader than that, as we discovered through talking to the Director and Curator of the Museum, OtakuSenpai Button.

In this first show we explore the reasons why Otaku established the Museum before we take a look at the background to the Manhattan Project which led to the development of the first atomic bomb and – subsequently – to the two bombs that were dropped on Japan at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. We then look at the work of nuclear reactors, and learn something of the background to nuclear accidents such as Chernobyl and Three Mile Island.

It’s a fascinating show – both in terms of the content Otaku has gathered, and also in terms of demonstrating how Second Life can be used for a learning experience.

This is the first episode of a two part show (the second will be shown later in the series) as we discover a part of the wealth of information and installations that the Museum hosts.

You can visit the Museum here: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Xemia/69/221/22
You can read more about the Museum here: http://otaku-155.wixsite.com/slmnw
The Museum has a Facebook Page here: https://www.facebook.com/slnuclearwarfare/
There are a series of videos about the Museum here, created by Petlove Petshop and Lorin Tone: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Xemia/69/221/22

Join us at 2pm SLT today, Monday 23rd January, for the new episode of Designing Worlds at our studio in Garden of Dreams – for the first show in the new season, when we’ll be paying a visit to Virtual Ability.

We’ll be hearing from Gentle Heron, one of the three founders of Virtual Ability, how the Iasland – and the nonprofit – came to be founded, and something of the design principles that underlie the islands, making them accessible to many kinds of disabilities. And we’ll be learning how they support new residents coming in to Second Life too.

We take a look at Health Island and explore the reading rooms, libraries and displays of various kinds – and above all the Path of Support that offers links the the myriad organisations that have a Second Life presence for a wide range of conditions.

Health Info Island, photographed by Wildstar Beaumont

Then we visit some of the residential islands that form a part of Virtual Ability, and meet some of the residents there who talk about their experiences, together with Stepinwolf Darkstone, the Cape Heron Apartments Manager.

Finally, accompanied by Gentle Heron and Suellen Heartsong, we visit a fascinating – and very informative – research project that has been developed on Virtual Health Adventures with Virtual Ability supporting a research project on diabetic foot health – a really important issue for the growing number of people with diabetes.

It all makes for a really interesting start to our Designing Worlds season – so do join us to watch it at 2pm SLT.

Join us today, Monday 15th September at 2pm SLT at the Designing Worlds studio in Garden of Dreams as we visit the wonderful new home that Froukje Hoorenbeek has created for Dutchie.

It’s a magnificent build that has been two years in the making. Froukje has released various pieces and sets over the last two years that were created for the house – and many have found their way into homes across the grid. But now, for the first time, all that creativity is drawn together in one magnificent home – and Designing Worlds was given the opportunity to explore it.

And as we explore it, we talk to Froukje about how she designs and creates, and the role that her life in the Netherlands plays in her creations.

You’ll be able to see this magnificent house for yourselves at the Home and Garden Expo.

This is a fascinating show that all lovers of fine design in Second Life will adore – make sure that you don’t miss it!
